With more than 100 000 hosted videos, viewed more than 6 millions times and 20 000 users, PeerTube is the decentralized free software alternative to videos platforms developed by Framasoft
PeerTube uses ActivityPub because this federation protocol is recommended by the W3C and is also used by other projects like the social network <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://joinmastodon.org/">Mastodon</a>.
March 2018 thus represents the birth of the PeerTube federations: the more this software will be used and supported, the more people will use it and contribute to it, and the faster it will evolve towards a concrete alternative to platforms such as YouTube.
IPFS is a great technology, but it still seems too young for streaming large files. The PeerTube P2P system based on well established protocols like HTTP and WebRTC, and the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://docs.joinpeertube.org/admin-following-instances?id=instances-redundancy">redundancy system</a> are more easy for us to use and to maintain.
It has been a very busy 6 months, but we have completed our roadmap and just released version 3 of PeerTube!
It implements all stretch goals we planned in our crowdfunding:
With PeerTube, chose <strong>your hosting company and the rules you believe in.</strong>
DTube does not seem open source, because publishing only compiled code hinders freedom of modification.
Since the first stable release of PeerTube in October 2018, <strong>every release</strong> added or improved moderation features:
It is now possible to display comments according to 2 criteria: the most recent first (default display) or most replies first.
PeerTube does not impose any remuneration model. This is the choice we have made, and others (like DTube) have made other choices. So it's up to you to see what suits you.
Yes, core PeerTube (PeerTube without installed plugins/themes) is compatible with GDPR:

It doesn't send personal data to any third party if P2P is disabled

It was already possible to report videos, and now you can also report accounts and comments. It's very simple to inform moderators of an instance about a problematic account. Go to the account page, click on the 3 horizontal dots on the right of the profile name, and select <i>Report this account</i>. A window will appear in which you can indicate the issue encountered and/or describe it. In the same way, it is now easy to report a comment: click on the <i>Options</i> menu under the comment you wish to report and select <i>Report this comment</i>.
PeerTube REST API
Test PeerTube REST API with the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://docs.joinpeertube.org/api-rest-getting-started">getting started guide</a>
It was not included in the crowdfunding, but we created an "Overview" page, that displays videos of some categories/tags/channels picked randomly, to show the diversity of the videos uploaded on PeerTube. You can see <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://peertube3.cpy.re/videos/overview">a demonstration here</a>.

the instance doesn't seem to be properly moderated or lacks federation policy ( = lack of ToS or CoC in the about page)
Framasoft remains the sole judge of this notion of “abuse”.

Nevertheless, it is worth remembering that the vast majority of videos published on the Internet (and even on YouTube) are shared for non-market purposes: remuneration is a tool, but not necessarily a main or essential purpose.
