PEERTUBE\'s backstage
FRAMASOFT DECENTRALIZES
FRAMASOFT PRESENTS
Behind PEERTUBE, there\'s the
\n\"De-google-ify Internet\" project
Among the PEERTUBE workers,
there\'s Chocobozzz,
it\'s Chocobozzz\'s baby
who at first developed it for 2 years.
Many contributors are on PEERTUBE
Such as Marie-Cécile Godwin
who works a lot on user experiment
design
to understand
how the systems work
and how they influence people
that\'s what she tries to bring to PEERTUBE.
One of PEERTUBE\'s code contributors,
Rigelk,
quickly get exited for this project
and started
to present it during conferences
and then to create code
that\'s how we met
and one thing leading to another,
\nhe became a Framasoft member.
David Revoy worked a lot on the illustrations
for PEERTUBE
and also created PEERTUBE\'s mascot,
Sépia,
a small octopus representing PEERTUBE.
\"How can Youtube be decentralized?\"
we were looking,
drinking after the FOSDEM
wondering what to do
we\'ll not use
Popcorn Time
you know this free-libre software used to hack videos
we had no idea…
and one day we heard about Chocobozzz
a free-libre software developer,
\nwho had this \"PEERTUBE\" project
on his free time
that was a decentralized
and federated
video streaming platform.
Hello, welcome to my house
I\'m David Revoy,
an illustrator artist
I use free-libre softwares since 2010
and illustrated FRAMASOFT\'s
Contributopia campaign.
By the way, we\'re going to meet Pouhiou
because there\'s a lot of work
\nto do on PEERTUBE.
Hi Pouhiou
how\'re doing?
wait I remove my…
Welcome to your house!
I think…
on the 3… you know, like a \"V\" for victory but with 3.
Knowing that a \"V\" needs 3 tentacles.
Let\'s say...
"We slightly change "
PEERTUBE\'s logo
so that the \"Peer\" is written in italics
and PEERTUBE with a small V3 exponant.
And knowing that there are 3 triangles
How do you explain what this 3 means?
Both the plugin system you know
the fact that it has been better rebuilt
allows you to really facilitate contribution
you don\'t need to do all the core code anymore
in the hot-air balloon mode
and go more on steampunk issues
or 3 ballons…
I\'m saying nonsense…
"But I like the whole universe "
of hot-air balloon,
\nthat\'s something I love
I had the chance to have
a hot-air balloon pilot mother
Really?
That\'s great
Hot-air balloon has a zen and quiet side too
that I appreciate
"and "
"you were talking about mountains,
\nbut we can "
create a small symbolism behind
especially because it creates a dynamic
in your… Wow that\'s cool!
I\'m Marie-Cécile
For a living,
I try to work the least possible
but I have bills to pay
so actually I\'m a designer.
I also try to change my career
towards the dyeing of wool
because it must be said,
computers are boring.
Concretely what does it mean to meet people
that use the objects?
In the interwiews I led
I spoke to people that weren\'t part of the free-libre
for example teachers or primary school teachers
that use PEERTUBE instance of the Lyon Academy for example.
They\'re very common use issues
it\'s everyday life
I want to upload a video
how do I do that?
I don\'t know PEERTUBE but I know YouTube,
\nhow do I do?
That\'s really interesting.
And especially people that use daily words,
that express their needs in a very pragmatic way.
And next to them, there are much more technical people,
or video makers who really had
very concrete use needs
like how do I preserve my community
if I moved to PEERTUBE.
It\'s interesting to see the different uses
and here again we didn\'t really talk about the software.
I often say that design is giving a form
meaning that I arrive and
gather together
the complicated information I see
and try to give them a comprehensible
and meaningful form
so sometimes it\'s just about seeing the constraints
to create a furniture or an interface
and sometimes it\'s more:
shit, we don\'t know what people using PEERTUBE do
and what they need.
How do you form it into
\nsomething comprehensible
and how do you retranscript it into an interface?
When we started PEERTUBE
Everyone told us:
you must have monetisation,
stats and chat tools for youtubers.
But we thought...
the problem isn\'t that we don\'t like youtubers,
"I used to be one, "
but it\'s just the iceberg visible part
of online videos.
After all
who shares videos
"on the Internet "
There\'s the teacher sharing his course,
the small online sweater shop
\nshowing you how to make stitches
to sell you its wool, needles.
Some people want to share videos
of their cats when they fell on the street.
We told ourselves that
we\'ll make a tool for these people
who have less needs...
and besides...
it allows us to make a PEERTUBE…
that isn\'t a copy of Youtube.
It allows us to create another tool
with other features.
Hi, I\'m Rigelk.
I\'m a PEERTUBE contributor,
for two years and a half now.
I first started
as any contributors
with questions on the software:
\"How does it work?\"
\"What\'s the long-term visio for streaming videos?\"
and \"How can I help you a little bit?\"
To me it was an important and good project.
PEERTUBE is a software
where developers usually prefer to contribute;
when they contribute online as least;
on a project hosting website
meaning which gathers
features, important contributions
such as project memory
containing
all the users\' and feature requests,
bug rapports...
When we upload a video on PEERTUBE
many mechanisms are working
When we\'re entering
the video metadata
the servor has to transform the video,
"and transcode it in various resolutions "
to make sure that the video can be seen
by any browser and device.
"Federation "
allows servors
and in fine users
to connect with each other.
In fact,
PEERTUBE project\'s advantage
"was this federation "
where big web giant servors weren\'t necessary
but we could create many small servors
that federated
and were interconnected together.
So...
they offer a huge video catalogue
\neven if the videos
are separated for many people.
"Chocobozzz\'s huge intuition "
was to add something more to the federation:
peer-to-peer video streaming.
"And live peer-to-peer video streaming "
allows, if your video is a success,
"and if many people "
connect at the same time to see your video,
it\'s not your servor that will load
and carry all these new people
that say \"Woaa\"
\"I want your video, I vant your video\",
the video is also shared
between the audience.
It\'s very important in PEERTUBE
as there\'s this whole question of...
data cost
"that is often "
forgotten by the platforms
when they offer videos,
like Youtube, we don\'t share the data cost
with you.
But the storage and transcoding costs
are really important,
and being able to
"keep his own data "
and own costs to scale that we wish
while having access
to an external video catalogue
make the strength of PEERTUBE\'s network.
PEERTUBE\'s installation is not
totally simple for everyone
because complicated technical issues
need to be fixed to optimise the video service.
After all, to serve videos
these are large files and you need an important bandwdith.
Not everyone will be able
to install a PEERTUBE service
and serve videos on himself.
That\'s why we differ several uses.
Some people will install
PEERTUBE on the servors
"because of they have more in-depth technical knowledge "
"and there are "
video creators,
visitors who watch
videos and follow accounts
of creators,
but it\'s 2 different audiences
\nand we\'re not asking eveyrone
to install a PEERTUBE instance.
At the beginning
I posted
I think it was...
the very first thing I posted
and the goal really was
to work with it.
It was PEERTUBE\'s only graphic universe.
It was...
this triangle that really speaks to me,
because it\'s like Zelda\'s triforce triangle
but inclined
and from here, I tried with a tv, an old CRT tv
the good tv
and immediately young people
"on the Pepper & Carrot project said to me
\n\"woaa, how comes his head is in a microwave?\" "
I felt very old.
I started to draw the logo
and just plugged
the small octopus below.
And I obtained a figure very quickly
"that wasn\'t known, "
and made for PEERTUBE.
When I showed this sketch on the IRC channel, they immediately...
agreed with a great degree of sympathy
and then to present it a bit to the community,
I had to
make a version that was more...
clean
a bit more vector puppet
"that\'s to say, the tentacles are separed "
we can move the eyes
"articulate it and "
that\'s what I published in the end.
GAFAM aren\'t free,
and that\'s what it\'s all about
I give many course in schools of
Innovation... Digital... Something,
it\'s interesting to be confronted
to student\'s point of views
to new generations
that don\'t see free things
as an exploitation of their data at all.
They just think \"Woa we\'re going to be watched\"
whereas it\'s a lot more perverse,
and on a very long period.
That\'s surveillance,
data accumulation,
profil creation,
that are very invasive and perverse,
and one of free-libre problems,
\nit\'s that to contribute and share
your voice, opinions, view or uses
you have to use filters,
you have to know how to publish on GitHub,
you have to be bold for creating a forum profil...
When I first wanted to
contribute to free-libre,
\njust to write a simple feedback
there\'s a huge obstacle
to overcome so it\'s complicated.
A lot of voices aren\'t heard.
My work is also to find
where usually
voices don\'t stand out and to bring out
the uses that are never never noticed.
The difference with more centralized platforms
is the fact that they are based on an attention economy
where they monetise views,
especially
with advertising,
the most standard mean,
and with online diffusion interactions,
called \"super chat\" on some platforms,
and this economy
specific to platforms
is totally disconnected from PEERTUBE
because we wanted PEERTUBE to remain a streaming platform
that wasn\'t related to a payment system,
that wasn\'t related to...
a recommendation system
that reinforces this monetisation
which is probably the main
"reason "
of bubble creation on other platforms,
attention bubbles,
"because we want to offer content so that "
the user platforms stays.
Which isn\'t PEERTUBE\'s case.
"We don\'t have a financial interest "
if the person stays
"and we don\'t have an interest to suggest "
more extreme videos,
we don\'t have an attention economy
and all its sides.
With the arrival of \"the live\" in v3
we\'re going to...
enjoy even more
the leverage of peer-to-peer
that we already use for video streaming
because many people will be watching
the same segment,
the same part of the video at the same time
and peer-to-peer will be fully realized
to help the servor to stream videos.
PEERTUBE is financed and maintained
by Framasoft association.
"Framasoft "
was created in 2004
and is a sort of an intermediary
between software world and free-libre culture
and people.
That\'s it...
\nAnd we try to bring more free-libre in people\'s lives.
Today,
Framasoft
"is a popular education association "
to digital world issues.
PEERTUBE\'s V3 was published in early January 2021.
Six months of development (by one single employee and volunteers)
\nand a fundraising of €68000 were necessary for V2 to become V3.
It includes a global search engine, better moderation tools, playlists and plugins
\nand live peer-to-peer video streaming
FRAMASOFT thanks all the 1299 fund donors and all the people
\nwho contributed to this project in their own way.
